I'tikaaf in Ramadan – Rules, Rewards, and Where It Can Be Performed

Introduction

I'tikaaf is one of the most spiritually uplifting acts of worship in Islam, especially in the last ten days of Ramadan. It is a period of complete devotion to Allah, where a person isolates themselves in the mosque for worship, reflection, and seeking Laylatul Qadr.
The Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ regularly observed I'tikaaf in the last ten nights of Ramadan, and it remains a recommended Sunnah for Muslims today. But where should I'tikaaf be performed? Are all mosques valid for I'tikaaf, or only specific ones? Let's explore the rewards, rules, and locations for this sacred act of worship.

What are the Virtues of I'tikaaf?

I'tikaaf is a time of detachment from worldly affairs to focus solely on Allah. It is a Sunnah that the Prophet ๏ทบ practiced every Ramadan until his passing.

Virtues of I'tikaaf

✅ Seeking Laylatul Qadr: Since Laylatul Qadr falls in the last ten nights, I'tikaaf increases your chances of witnessing this night of 1,000 months of reward (Surah Al-Qadr 97:3).

✅ Spiritual Renewal: It helps cleanse the heart, strengthen faith, and deepen the connection with Allah.

✅ Following the Sunnah: The Prophet ๏ทบ said:

> Whoever observes I'tikaaf for one day, seeking thereby the Face of Allah, Allah will place between him and the Fire three ditches wider than the distance between the east and the west. (Tabarani)

With such immense rewards, every Muslim should strive to do I'tikaaf, even if only for a few nights.

Where can I'tikaaf be performed?

A. The Three Mosques Specified by the Prophet ๏ทบ

The Prophet ๏ทบ mentioned that I'tikaaf is to be performed only in three mosques:

1. Masjid Al-Haram (Makkah)

2. Masjid An-Nabawi (Madinah)

3. Masjid Al-Aqsa (Jerusalem)

He ๏ทบ said:

> "There is no I'tikaaf except in the three mosques: Al-Masjid Al-Haram, the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah ๏ทบ, and Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa." (Abu Dawood 2473, authenticated by some scholars)

B. Can I do i'tikaaf in any masjid?

Majority of scholars (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) disagree with the strict interpretation and say I'tikaaf is valid in any mosque where Jumu'ah is held.

Why? The Quran says:

> And do not have relations with your wives while you are in I'tikaaf in the mosques. (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:187)

The word "mosques" (masaajid) is plural, meaning I'tikaaf is valid in more than just the three sacred mosques.

C. What if there is no Jumu'ah in the Masjid?

Some scholars (like Ibn Taymiyyah) say I'tikaaf should be done in a mosque that holds Jumu'ah, so the person does not have to leave the masjid for prayer.

Options if your mosque has no Jumu'ah:
✅ Choose a bigger mosque where Jumu'ah is prayed.
✅ If needed, leave for Jumu'ah and return immediately (though it is not ideal).

Thus, the safest option is to perform I'tikaaf in a masjid where Jumu'ah is observed.

Rules and Conditions of I'tikaaf

Who Can Perform I'tikaaf?

Men: Must observe I'tikaaf in a mosque.

Women: Scholars differ—some allow I'tikaaf at home in a designated prayer space, while others say it must also be in a mosque.

What is Allowed?

✅ Eating, drinking, and sleeping inside the mosque.
✅ Speaking only about necessary matters.
✅ Using the bathroom and performing wudu.
✅ Reading Islamic books and seeking knowledge.

What is Not Allowed?

❌ Leaving the mosque without a valid reason (unless necessary).
❌ Engaging in worldly activities (business, work, unnecessary talk).
❌ Marital relations or anything that invalidates fasting.

How to Make the Most of I'tikaaf

Prioritize Worship: Salah, Quran, Dhikr, and Dua.

Seek Laylatul Qadr: Intensify supplications and night prayers.

Avoid Distractions: No excessive phone use, social media, or unnecessary conversations.

Make Sincere Tawbah: I'tikaaf is a time for repentance and spiritual renewal.

---

Conclusion

I'tikaaf is a powerful Sunnah that allows a Muslim to disconnect from dunya and reconnect with Allah. While some scholars say it should only be performed in the three sacred mosques, the majority opinion allows I'tikaaf in any mosque that holds Jumu'ah.

Even if you cannot perform 10 full days, try to do at least a few days or even a single night—every effort counts in the eyes of Allah!
