10 Haram Acts in Marriage Every Muslim Couple Must Avoid – Even If You’re Married

Marriage in Islam is a sacred bond. But being married doesn’t give you permission to cross Islamic boundaries. Sadly, some couples fall into sins unknowingly, thinking that being married makes everything halal. This post sheds light on haram (forbidden) acts that remain prohibited even after marriage, according to the Qur’an, Sunnah, and scholarly opinions.

1. Engaging in Anal Intercourse

Ruling: Strictly haram in Islam.
Evidence:
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“He who has intercourse with his wife in her back passage has disbelieved.”
– [Abu Dawood, 3904 | Classed as Sahih by Al-Albani]

Even if a husband and wife are married, anal sex is forbidden and a major sin.

2. Having Intimacy During Menstruation

Ruling: Haram.
Evidence:
“They ask you about menstruation. Say: It is harm, so keep away from women during menstruation…”
(Qur’an 2:222)

Sexual intercourse during menses is prohibited, though other forms of affection are allowed.

3. Sharing Private Marital Intimacy Publicly

Ruling: Haram
Hadith:
“The worst of people in the sight of Allah on the Day of Resurrection is a man who has intercourse with his wife and then spreads her secrets.”
– [Sahih Muslim]

Talking about bedroom matters to others is a serious violation of Islamic etiquette.

4. Watching Pornography or Explicit Content Together

Ruling: Still haram, even if both agree.
Why: It involves looking at the awrah of others, which is forbidden, and it corrupts the heart.
Qur’an:
“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze…” (Surah An-Nur 24:30)

5. Using Sex Toys That Imitate Private Parts

Ruling: Majority of scholars consider it haram due to imitating the awrah, while some allow non-shape-based aids if it doesn’t involve harm.
Note: Seek knowledge and fatwa from a qualified scholar if in doubt.

6. Intimacy While Fasting in Ramadan (During the Day)

Ruling: Major sin
Qur’an:
“…Permitted to you, on the night of the fasts, is the approach to your wives…”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:187)

Sexual relations during the day in Ramadan invalidates the fast and requires kafarah (expiation).

7. Forcing Intimacy on Your Spouse

Ruling: Islam emphasizes mutual consent.
Hadith:
The Prophet ﷺ said: “None of you should fall upon his wife like an animal...”
– [Sunan Abu Dawood, Hasan]

Marriage is not a license to violate consent.

8. Neglecting Emotional and Physical Rights

Ruling: Sinful
Both husband and wife have rights. A husband must not ignore his wife's emotional needs, nor should a wife continuously reject intimacy without valid reason.
Hadith:
“The best of you are those who are best to their wives…”
– [Tirmidhi]

9. Using Haram Income for Marital Life

If your source of income is haram (e.g., fraud, interest), then spending it on your family is not considered barakah.
Qur’an:
“O you who have believed, eat not up your property among yourselves in vanities...”
(Surah An-Nisa 4:29)

10. Engaging in Public Display of Intimacy (PDA)

Islam promotes modesty even between husband and wife. Intimacy is meant to be private.
Hadith:
“Modesty is part of faith.” – [Bukhari & Muslim]

Conclusion:

Marriage is beautiful in Islam, but boundaries still exist. Knowing what is halal and haram protects your relationship and ensures barakah in your union. Let’s strive to love each other within the limits of the Shari’ah.
