What Islam Says About Evil Eye, Magic, and How to Protect Yourself (With Du’as)

In today’s world, many Muslims experience unexplained hardships — health problems, financial losses, or sudden emotional changes — and wonder if it's due to the evil eye or sihr (magic). Islam acknowledges the existence of both and provides clear guidance for protection.

Let’s explore what the Qur’an and Sunnah say about this, and how you can safeguard yourself and your loved ones.

What is the Evil Eye (al-‘Ayn)?

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"The evil eye is real. If anything were to overtake the divine decree, it would be the evil eye."
[Sahih Muslim 2188]

The evil eye occurs when someone looks at something with envy or admiration without saying Bismillah or praying for blessings (Barak Allahu feek). It can harm the person, object, or animal looked at.

What is Sihr (Magic) in Islam?

Sihr (magic/sorcery) is real and haram. It involves jinn and shirk (associating partners with Allah). The Qur’an mentions the magicians of Pharaoh and how they deceived people.

“And they learned what harmed them, not what benefited them...”
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:102

How to Protect Yourself from the Evil Eye & Magic

1. Recite the Morning & Evening Adhkar (Du’as)
This includes:

Transliteration:
Allahumma inni a‘udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wal-‘ajzi wal-kasal, wal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

Meaning:
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and sorrow, weakness and laziness, cowardice and miserliness, being heavily in debt and being overpowered by others.

Hadith:
Sahih al-Bukhari 6369

2. Surah al-Falaq and Surah an-Naas (Every Morning and Night)

“Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak…”
Surah Al-Falaq 113 & An-Naas 114

The Prophet ﷺ used to recite these to protect himself, his family, and companions from harm.

3. Surah Al-Baqarah in the Home

“Do not turn your houses into graves. Verily, Shaytan does not enter the house where Surah al-Baqarah is recited.”
Sahih Muslim 780

4. Saying Mashaa’Allah and Barakallahu feekum

When admiring something — say:

  • “Masha’Allah” (What Allah has willed)
  • “Barakallahu feek” (May Allah bless it)

This helps prevent giving the evil eye to others unintentionally.

5. Ruqyah (Spiritual Healing)

Ruqyah is a prescribed Islamic treatment using Qur’anic verses and du’as. You can perform it on yourself or a loved one.

Example verse for ruqyah:

“And We send down from the Qur’an that which is a healing and a mercy…”
Surah Al-Isra 17:82

Signs of Evil Eye or Magic

  • Sudden depression, fatigue, or sickness
  • Continuous blockages in marriage or rizq
  • Nightmares or seeing snakes/scorpions
  • Unexplainable anger or mood swings

Important: Always combine du’a with medical or psychological help when needed.

Can a Muslim Go to a Magician for Help?

No. It is strictly forbidden.

"Whoever goes to a soothsayer or magician and believes what they say has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad."
Ahmad & Abu Dawood

Final Advice

The evil eye and magic are real, but so is Allah’s protection. Trust in Him, recite your adhkar, and never resort to haram means like visiting magicians or wearing un-Islamic amulets.

“And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him.”
Surah At-Talaq 65:3
