The Dangers of the Tongue – Every Word is Recorded

Learn about the dangers of the tongue in Islam. Every word we say is recorded by angels, and the Qur’an and Hadith emphasize guarding speech. Discover sins of the tongue, hadith warnings, and practical ways to control your speech as a Muslim.

The Dangers of the Tongue – Every Word is Recorded

In Islam, the tongue is one of the greatest blessings Allah ﷻ has given us. Through it, we recite the Qur’an, make du’a, and speak words of kindness. Yet at the same time, the tongue can be one of the most dangerous tools leading a person to Hellfire. That is why the Qur’an and Sunnah repeatedly remind us to guard our speech, because every word we utter is recorded.

📖 Every Word Is Recorded in the Qur’an

Allah ﷻ says:

“Not a word does he utter but that with him is an observer prepared [to record].”
(Surah Qaf 50:18)

This ayah shows us that even casual words, whether good or bad, are not lost. The angels (Kiraman Katibeen) write down every statement. On the Day of Judgment, our tongues will testify against us.

⚠️ Hadith on the Dangers of the Tongue

The Prophet ﷺ warned:

  • “A man may say a word pleasing to Allah, without considering it of any significance, and Allah raises him by it in ranks. And a man may say a word displeasing to Allah, without considering it of any significance, and it causes him to fall into Hellfire.”
    (Bukhari, Muslim)

  • “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent.”
    (Bukhari, Muslim)

These ahadith remind us that speech is not just casual—it has eternal consequences.

🚫 Major Sins of the Tongue

Some of the biggest dangers come from sins committed with the tongue:

  1. Backbiting (ghibah): Speaking about someone behind their back in a way they would dislike.
  2. Slander (buhtaan): Making false accusations.
  3. Lying: The Prophet ﷺ called lying one of the signs of hypocrisy.
  4. Mocking or insulting others: Islam teaches dignity and respect in speech.
  5. Vulgar or abusive language: The Prophet ﷺ was never foul in speech.

Each of these can destroy a person’s good deeds if not repented from.

🌹 The Virtue of Guarding the Tongue

The Prophet ﷺ once asked: “Do you know what will make most people enter Paradise?”
They said: Allah and His Messenger know best.
He said: “Taqwa of Allah and good character.”

Then he said: And do you know what will make most people enter Hellfire?”
He said: “The mouth and the private parts.”
(Tirmidhi, authentic)

Guarding the tongue is a sign of true piety and leads to salvation.

Practical Ways to Guard the Tongue

  1. Think before speaking – Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?
  2. Increase dhikr – Replace idle talk with remembering Allah.
  3. Recite Qur’an daily – Use your tongue for what pleases Allah.
  4. Avoid gossip gatherings – Don’t sit where backbiting is common.
  5. Apologize quickly – If you slip, seek forgiveness from Allah and the person wronged.

💡 Conclusion: Every Word Matters

In Islam, words are not just sounds—they are deeds. Every word is recorded, and on the Day of Judgment, our tongues will testify for us or against us. Let us fill our speech with Qur’an, dhikr, dua, and words of kindness.

As the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever guards what is between his jaws (the tongue) and his legs (private parts), I guarantee him Paradise.”
(Bukhari)
