The 5 Types of Hearts in Islam – Which One Do You Have?

In the Qur’an, Allah doesn’t just speak about the physical heart — He speaks about the spiritual heart.
The heart in Islam is the seat of faith, sincerity, and guidance. When it’s pure, a person draws close to Allah; when it’s corrupted, everything else follows.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Verily, in the body there is a piece of flesh which, if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Truly it is the heart.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 52)

So, which heart do you have? Let’s explore the 5 types of hearts mentioned by scholars of Islam.

🕊️ 1. The Sound Heart (Al-Qalb As-Saleem)

This is the pure heart filled with iman (faith), taqwa (piety), and ikhlas (sincerity).

Allah says:

إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ
“Except the one who comes to Allah with a sound heart.”
(Surah Ash-Shu’ara 26:89)

It’s a heart free from arrogance, envy, and hypocrisy. Its owner loves Allah, obeys Him sincerely, and forgives others.
💫 Example: The heart of Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام.

🩷 Ask yourself: Do I seek Allah’s pleasure above all?

2. The Dead Heart (Al-Qalb Al-Mayit)

This heart has no light of faith. It’s attached to dunya, following desires and forgetting the Hereafter.

It neither loves what Allah loves nor hates what Allah hates. It only follows its nafs.
💭 It feels nothing when sinning, nor regret when missing salah.

Allah warns:

“Then woe to those whose hearts are hardened against the remembrance of Allah.”
(Surah Az-Zumar 39:22)

🖤 Ask yourself: Have sins stopped touching my heart?

💔 3. The Sick Heart (Al-Qalb Al-Mareed)

This is the most common type today — a heart mixed with good and evil.
It believes in Allah but struggles with desires, jealousy, pride, or laziness.

Allah says:

فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَهُمُ اللَّهُ مَرَضًا
“In their hearts is a disease, and Allah increases their disease.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:10)

The good news? It can be healed through repentance, salah, Qur’an, and dhikr.
💊 Cure: Frequent tawbah, night prayers, and cutting off sins.

💡 4. The Soft and Humble Heart (Al-Qalb Al-Layeen)

A heart that trembles when hearing Allah’s words and softens for His remembrance.

Allah says:

اللَّهُ نَزَّلَ أَحْسَنَ الْحَدِيثِ ... تَقْشَعِرُّ مِنْهُ جُلُودُ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ
“The skins of those who fear their Lord tremble from it, then their hearts soften to the remembrance of Allah.”
(Surah Az-Zumar 39:23)

This heart forgives easily, loves people for Allah’s sake, and quickly turns back when it sins.
🌸 Ask yourself: Do I cry when I hear Qur’an or remember death?

🔒 5. The Sealed Heart (Al-Qalb Al-Makhtoom)

This is the most dangerous state — when someone persistently rejects truth until Allah seals their heart.

Allah says:

خَتَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ
“Allah has set a seal upon their hearts.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:7)

Such a heart no longer receives guidance or feels remorse. May Allah protect us from reaching that level.

🌿 How to Soften and Purify Your Heart

  1. Make dhikr daily — say SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar often.
  2. Read and reflect on the Qur’an every day.
  3. Keep away from sins that harden the heart.
  4. Sit with righteous people and attend circles of knowledge.
  5. Make du’a:

“O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion.”
    (Tirmidhi 2140)

❤️ Final Reflection

Your heart is your real home.
Clean it, fill it with love for Allah, and guard it from everything that darkens it.

“Indeed, Allah does not look at your appearance or wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds.”
(Sahih Muslim 2564)

Which heart do you have today — and which one are you working to have tomorrow?
